Baseball League in South Korea Update their Foreign Players Clause

On Tuesday, the top baseball leagues in South Korea changed it’s foreign players contract clause during Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) board meeting.


At the moment, if a foreign player in the KBO chose not to sign another contract with their original team once their contract expired, the team had the right to keep that player on for another two years.  The two year period had been lowered from five years back in January of 2015.

Today, the KBO is reverting back to the previous clause where the Korean team had the right to keep that player on for another five years if they choose not to renew the foreign player’s contract. The change will take effect after the ongoing season and will not apply retroactively.


Under the KBO rules, if a team does not make an offer to re-sign the foreign player, then the player becomes a free agent and is able to sign with any baseball club in Korea or other clubs around the world.


This clause gives the Korean baseball club an option to retain the player in case the foreign player does not want to renew a contract with his current club so that the team is able to keep them longer or give them an unconditional release.
